Why Become a Mentor?

Mentorship is a two-way street. Both mentor and mentee benefit from mentorship. The Muse (themuse.com) gives three major benefits of being a mentor:

  1. It makes you a better leader
  2. It helps you learn more about your company
  3. It makes you feel great

Mentors are also six times more likely to get a promotion and 20% more likely to get a pay raise than those not involved in mentorship (according to a study conducted by Sun Microsystems).

ArtOfMentoring.net adds even more good reasons to become a mentor. They include the fact that teaching someone else strengthens your own skills. What’s more, spending time with younger or less-experienced people can actually open you up to fresh, new perspectives.

Why Become a Mentee?

There are many great reasons to find yourself a mentor. Forbes.com lists three main ones:

  1. Good mentors help you set measurable goals
  2. Good mentors never let you settle and become complacent
  3. Good mentors will share personal experiences that inspire and motivate you

Having a mentor means you are ready and willing to grow, personally and professionally. Mentors can help advise you on decisions in your life and career. Sometimes just having a sounding board can be very helpful. They can also help make connections to people and resources that would be helpful to you.
